Dr. McDonnell’s formal training includes human and animal psychology, equine ethology, as well as reproductive physiology and behavior. She holds Animal Behavior Society board certification as an Applied Animal Behaviorist, and is a very proud to be an honorary member of the American College of Theriogenologists. Dr. McDonnell’s entire career has been based at Penn Vet where she is Founding Head of the Havemeyer Equine Behavior Program. Her work includes clinical, research, and teaching activities in reproduction and behavior, with particular expertise in stallion reproductive physiology and behavior. She consults internationally on stallion breeding behavior and management. She also assists insurance companies, courts and legal teams with matters involving stallion behavior, general horse behavior, human-horse interaction and safety, least-stress handling of equine patients, as well as equine welfare. Dr. McDonnell has authored two introductory level books on horse behavior, as well as a book and DVD entitled The Equid Ethogram: A practical field guide to horse behavior. She also co-edited of The Domestic Horse, The Origins, Development, and Managing of its Behaviour. The American Association of Equine Practitioners has honored Sue with the George Stubbs Award for contributions by non-veterinarians to veterinary medicine. Most recently, National Association of Equine Academics has awarded Sue their Henneke Award for sustained contributions to equine science education.
