This case-based session will summarize key clinical aspects of canine and feline heartworm. Geographic prevalence in dogs and cats, screening test recommendations, along with the complexities of diagnosis, prevention needs, and pet-owner communication tips will be discussed. The recently updated American Heartworm Society (AHS) and Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) guidelines will be reviewed.
By the end of the session participants should feel prepared to incorporate the AHS and CAPC guidelines into their day-to-day practice recommendations, and communicate the importance of heartworm awareness to canine and feline pet parents.
