This lecture will cover common presentations of pruritus in dogs and cats, including the eosinophilic complex in cats. Initial approach to pruritus with initial diagnostic testing such as skin cytology, skin scrapes, trichogram, and dermatophyte culture will be reviewed. Treatment options will be discussed for demodicosis in dogs and cats; including Demodex gatoi in cats and scabies in dogs. We will also cover identification of secondary yeast and bacterial infections on the skin and new guidelines for antibiotic use when secondary infections are present. Symptomatic therapy and the importance of topical therapy will be discussed.
