This lecture will cover options for safe long-term management in dogs and cats with chronic allergy symptoms, including pruritus that has become refractory to treatment and recurring skin and ear infections. Otitis externa will be discussed in detail, outlying all factors that predispose and directly cause otitis externa. Short-term and long-term topical otic medications and prevention of future otitis will be reviewed. Long-term options to address underlying allergies, such as allergy testing and allergen-specific immunotherapy, including routes of administration, will be discussed in detail.
