The veterinary technician profession has been grappling with such issues as lack of job satisfaction, low wages, lack of professional respect, limited career advancement, and veterinary technician underutilization for many years. Veterinary hospitals around the country have been busier than ever during the COVID pandemic amplifying the shortage of veterinary technicians which has existed for several years. We will review multiple surveys conducted over the past 30 years to understand the issues and current movements to address the ongoing issues. Advanced degrees, veterinary technician specialization, and other potential solutions will also be discussed.
